Came across a feature in windows 7 the other day that caught me out, I created icons on the desktop and they would miraculously disappear a few days later. After some investigation it turns out a task Windows 7 runs every Sunday caused the problem, the task checks your shortcuts and removes any for which it cannot find the target. Any shortcuts to network locations get removed when the task runs and the computer is off of the network.
To overcome this problem you need to disable the Diagnosis task; Open Task Scheduler, Microsoft , Windows , Diagnosis. In the right pane , Right click on Scheduled , choose 'Disable'.
