Getting used to this new HTC Desire running the Google Android OS 2.1. Brilliant phone in many ways, annoyingly different to the Blackberries I've come from.
One of the first gotchas I came across was getting the (unlocked) phone to connect to the Vodafone Business contract network - in fairness not a fault of the phone, but rather the default settings that come with the device.
Only discovered when I left the wirelesss blanket of the office after setting things up for the first time (the setup wizards walk you through choosing pre-configured wireless/carrier networks as well as connected to any wifi networks it can see). I started getting 'Synchronisation Error' and Google maps errors. Eventually worked out that I wasn't connected properly to the Vodafone data network, although voice calls worked fine
The phone comes with pre-configured Vodafone settings for contract which set the APN (Access Point Name) and username/passwords required for these
It looks like (for us) that these APN settings were not right - as default these were setup for "Vodafone Prepay ISP" and the APN was set to "pp.vodafone.co.uk" but changing these settings to:
APN: 'internet'
Username: 'web'
Password: 'web'
sorted this problem
You can access these settings by going:
Settings -> Wireless & Networks -> Mobile networks -> Access Point Names -> then select the Vodafone contract settings (at the top for us) and edit the settings
..and now all good!
